At Placeable Solutions, we’re proud to support the national roll-out of Changing Places facilities across Australia. These purpose-built toilets and amenities provide greater freedom and accessibility for people with high support needs and their carers.
What are Changing Places toilets?
Changing Places toilets are fully accessible public bathrooms designed to provide safety, dignity and comfort for people with severe or profound disabilities. Unlike standard accessible toilets, they are larger in size and include:
- An adult-sized, height-adjustable change table
- A ceiling hoist
- Ample circulation space for carers and wheelchairs
- Features that meet strict national Changing Places facility design standards
These facilities ensure that everyone can access public spaces such as shopping centres, parks, community hubs and transport precincts.

Who benefits from Changing Places toilets?
Changing Places facilities are designed for people who cannot use a standard accessible toilet, including:
- People with complex mobility needs
- People living with multiple or severe disabilities
- Carers who need additional space and equipment to provide safe support
By installing a Changing Places toilet, communities create inclusive environments where people with disabilities can participate more fully in everyday life.
Accessible Australia & Changing Places Funding
The Australian Government, through the Accessible Australia program (which replaces the Changing Places initiative), is funding the development of new facilities nationwide. This initiative is designed to increase the number of Changing Places toilets and ensure they are strategically located where they are most needed.
Local councils, not-for-profit organisations and other entities may be eligible for Changing Places funding to design and install these facilities. Funding helps cover planning, construction and compliance with the Changing Places Australia design standards.

What are the Changing Places facility designs?
Changing Places facilities come in several standardised designs to ensure compliance with national guidelines, while still allowing flexibility for different locations. Each layout is carefully developed to provide maximum accessibility, safety, and dignity for users and their carers.
Changing Places Design 1A – Without shower, rectangular
This is one of the most widely used Changing Places facility layouts. The rectangular design incorporates all required features, including an adult-sized, height-adjustable change table, a ceiling hoist, and ample circulation space for wheelchair access. The long rectangular shape makes it easy to integrate into existing community buildings, shopping centres or indoor public facilities where space is available but showers are not essential.
Best suited for: Indoor community centres, shopping precincts, libraries, and civic facilities.
Changing Places Design 1B – Without shower, square
This layout provides the same essential facilities as Design 1A, but with a square footprint. The square shape creates more centralised manoeuvring space, giving carers and wheelchair users additional room to move freely and safely. This makes it especially practical in high-traffic public areas where multiple people may need to access the space at once.
Best suited for: Transport hubs, sports venues, entertainment complexes, and busy public buildings.
Changing Places Design 1C – Without shower, alternative door location
Design 1C offers the same rectangular layout as Design 1A but with the entry door relocated. This variation allows greater flexibility for installations where site constraints, building structures, or access requirements prevent a standard door placement. By repositioning the door, the facility can still maintain full compliance while adapting to unique site conditions.
Best suited for: Locations with limited building frontage or tricky access points, such as retrofitted council buildings, heritage sites, or constrained urban environments.
Changing Places Design 2 – With shower, rectangular
Design 2 is a larger rectangular facility that includes a built-in shower, in addition to all other standard Changing Places features. The inclusion of a shower recess and fold-down seat provides greater functionality for users who may require personal care beyond toileting. This design is particularly beneficial in recreational areas, transport hubs, or facilities where people may spend longer periods of time and require more comprehensive amenities.
Best suited for: Recreation parks, swimming pools, travel stops, airports, and regional centres.
Portable Changing Places Bathroom Pod – Basic floor plan
Our Portable Changing Places Bathroom Pod is a prefabricated, modular Changing Places toilet that offers a complete facility in a standalone structure. Delivered as a ready-made unit, it provides a fast and efficient solution for councils and organisations who want to expand accessibility without the need for major building works. The changing places pod design includes all required fixtures, with flexibility for placement in outdoor or remote areas where permanent infrastructure may not be available.
Best suited for: Parks, beaches, event venues, regional areas, and locations requiring quick installation of a compliant facility.
